Our world is increasingly becoming more interconnected. This globalisation highlights the need for highly trained mental health professionals to address trauma, addiction, depression, academic and career concerns in clinics, hospitals, schools, and universities.
Counselors are highly trained professionals assisting people to live more joyful, productive lives. No one would seriously doubt that life is challenging, and at times, heart breaking- we need only to look around.
Then, there are other issues that while seemingly less pressing, can be very big concerns for the person grappling with them. Good examples of such concerns involve career and vocational identity issues. School counselors and career counselors help students and adult clients address career and employment concerns through testing, interviewing, and of course, counseling.
Anyone interested in becoming a counselor must be healthy themselves. Counseling is challenging work and maintaining one’s own physical and mental health is critical for success in the profession. Counselors must also be open-minded, non judgmental, tolerate ambiguity, and be lifelong learners.
In India, the awareness about need and importance of counseling is quite low as compared to foreign countries. But here as well, people now understand the need to communicate their deepest feelings to a counselor instead of bottling them inside.
Schools have started keeping a position of counselor who can deal with children who require counseling. This is quite an important step because the children are the future of the country and if some things are holding them back then they do need expert advice to break free and live a fully cherished childhood.
Adolescent is the age when many children often make wrong decisions in lack of guidance and if there is a counselor who is there to listen and guide them without judging or punishing them, then they can actually be more frank and focus on good things.
Every relationship involves conflicts and conflict management is a skill that many of us lack in. Counseling in marriage and relationships help people to bond better and make relationships smoother.
Counseling also helps one improve the skills of decision making, reduce tension, maintain a better self-esteem and confidence and feel more positive and optimistic towards life. So, instead of pushing oneself in the dark, one can actually seek a professional counselor and try live life with a better approach to it.

 

OBJECTIVES

• To explore and evolve attitudes, values and beliefs that facilitates work with children as mental health professionals.

• To acquire knowledge and understanding of theoretical constructs and socio-cultural perspectives in the context of counseling.

• To develop skills to plan, provide and monitor counseling interventions for children and child related systems.

• To develop skills of mobilizing resources and networking & collaborating with stakeholders.

 

PERSPECTIVE

• The Course is planned based on ‘Developmental’, ‘Ecological’ and ‘Rights’ perspective. This would facilitate the learners/ trainees to plan and undertake mental health activities for enabling and empowering children and their families in different contexts.
• To enable the learner to function effectively as a mental health professional, the programme would include understanding of theoretical constructs, development of self, as well as acquisition of skills through experiential and action learning.
